Question about Silver Eagles and Silver Maples

This may be a stupid question, but I cannot figure out the discrepancy in size between the American Silver Eagle and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance.

I don't have a scale, or I'd weigh them. But the ASE feels a little heavier than the CSML to me. Am I imagining it?

I know the difference in purity, but I don't think that .0009 extra purity would be noticable- in terms of actual size. Am I wrong?

Re: Question about Silver Eagles and Silver Maples

I think that it might have to do with the thickness of both the ASE and the Maple Leaf. I had to google search on some information and I found that the ASE is 2.98 mm thick while the Canadian Maple Leaf is 3.29 mm thick.

So while the Maple Leaf is smaller (38 mm in diameter) in diameter than the Silver American Eagle (40.6 mm in diameter), the Maple Leaf is thicker than the American silver eagle. They both should weigh the same.

EDIT: I had to use google search to find the coin thickness information because I did not know what the thickness of the ASE and the Maple Leaf were.

Yep. I just weighed 2 Maples and a SAE. One of the Maples, a 2006, was pretty heavy at 31.32 grams. The other Maple and the SAE were within a hundredth at 31.13. There will be a small variation in the coins from the blanks but no was you could tell it without a scale that will read to .01 gram.

The size that really counts is 1 troy oz of pure silver.

Interesting in that the 2006 Maple that I pulled from an airtite to weigh has the white spotting that everyone is griping about. Most on my Maples are in sheets in my SDB so I can't look at them.

You got that right - TOYOTA - or should I say Government Motors.

The difference between .999 and .9999 purity is so small that variation in blank weight makes some Maples heavier than SAEs.

While we are on the topic of Maples and SAEs, which one would be the better choice? Prices appear quite similar so which one would you chose if you had the choice?

Being in the USA, SAE's for me, however, most of my rounds are generic.:15_1_70v:

Personally I like the SAE's for their beauty but, I like the Maples for the simplicity of their design. That being said I have equal amounts of both.

For govt-minted bullion, the best choice is whichever is cheaper! I really prefer the ASE over the SML, as a "prettier" round, but YMMV. I don't think you can find a higher quality private minted round compared to a ASE. Some folks on GIM contend that the extra premium on govt-minted bullion will pay off on resale versus generic. I'm not sure about that, when I sold a bunch of silver several years ago, I was only offered spot for my ASE's (3 tubes), which I politely declined.
